Columns Among the Ruins of Pompeii

Walking through the ruins of Pompeii was amazing.  There were spots of total devastation and spots that had hardly been touched by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius.  I felt like I was standing in the middle of history.

Round & Round at the Vatican Museum

Circular stairway at Vatican Museum

The circular staircase at the Vatican Museum connects visitors between floors and is a very popular spot for photography.  It’s easy to think of the Vatican as located in Italy, but it’s actually in Vatican City — an independent principality contained within the city of Rome.

Hillside Hotels in Sorrento

Hotels on the Cliff in Sorrento

The coastline of Sorrento is dotted with hotels and homes built into the side of a cliff.  They provide a beautiful view of the sea, and when the fog is cleared you can see Capri off the coast.

Sutter’s Mill

Sutters Mill and the California Gold Rush

I think those of us who grew up on the west coast spent lots of time learning about the California Gold Rush.  I had the chance to visit the site of the infamous Sutter’s Mill, where a replica now stands.  This is where the first gold was found that sparked the gold rush and the migration west.

Love the Louvre

Courtyard entrance to Louvre in Paris

A first visit to Paris will usually include a visit to the Louvre, and mine was no exception.  While there is some great art there, and the architecture is amazing, it wasn’t my favorite Paris museum.  Still, it’s probably one of those things that you just have to see and make up your mind for yourself.

San Jose State University

San Jose State University

I love visiting college campuses!  This photo is of the Tower Hall, with a pleasant grassy area in the foreground.  During the sunny weather, it’s a popular spot with students.  If the campus intrigues you, read my post about San Jose State University.

Waiting for the Elevator

If there’s one thing that separates upscale hotels from run of the mill, it’s the attention paid to detail.  I loved the elevator waiting area with its vibrant red wall and lighting.  The two chairs are a nice touch for when the elevator seems to take forever!

A Rainy Day Deck

A deck can be a pretty lonely place to be on a rainy day.  This one was at the Edgewater Hotel in Seattle.

The 6th Arrondissement in Paris

Paris is full of interesting buildings.  From the architectural masterpiece of the Eiffel Tower to Gothic architecture of Notre Dame to the stone buildings that make up so many of the offices.  This was some type of governmental building in the 6h arrondissement, and was going through so routine maintenance.

French Impressionism at Musee d’Orsay

Musee d'Orsay in Paris

The Musee d’Orsay was one of my favorite museums in Pairs (the top was probably the Rodin Museum).  As a fan of French Impressionism, I spent hours looking at some of my favorite painters and works of art.  The architecture of the building, an old Railway Station, was just as impressive as the works within its walls.
