Eiffel Tower Las Vegas-Style

Eiffel Tower at Paris Hotel & Casino Las Vegas

Closer to home than the original, the Eiffel Tower at the Paris Hotel & Resort in Las Vegas is like much of the rest of the city’s attractions – over the top, a bit on the tacky side, but still luring visitors.

Sunset on Kona

Kona Sunset

The beaches may be more volcanic rock than white sand, but the sunsets still charms visitors to the Big Island of Hawaii.

A Storm Along the Beach

Storm along the beach

Even when there’s a storm brewing off shore, a Caribbean Beach is still a wonderful place to be. In this photo, the wind has started but the cloud and the rain are still a few hours off.

Capri, Italy

It’s countdown time until I leave for Italy, so I’m looking over some of my photos from previous visits.  This one was taken on the island of Capri, just off the Amalfi Coast.

Columns Among the Ruins of Pompeii

Walking through the ruins of Pompeii was amazing.  There were spots of total devastation and spots that had hardly been touched by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius.  I felt like I was standing in the middle of history.

Grand Canal in Las Vegas

Las Vegas Gran Canal at Venetian Resort

Ever the leader in faux attractions, this “replica” of Venice’s Grand Canal is in a shopping area between the Venetian and Palazzo Resorts.  It’s nothing like the real thing, but people still queue up for the gondola ride.

Hillside Hotels in Sorrento

Hotels on the Cliff in Sorrento

The coastline of Sorrento is dotted with hotels and homes built into the side of a cliff.  They provide a beautiful view of the sea, and when the fog is cleared you can see Capri off the coast.

Sutter’s Mill

Sutters Mill and the California Gold Rush

I think those of us who grew up on the west coast spent lots of time learning about the California Gold Rush.  I had the chance to visit the site of the infamous Sutter’s Mill, where a replica now stands.  This is where the first gold was found that sparked the gold rush and the migration west.

A Pool to Infinity

Infinity pool at Cancun Hilton Resort & Spa

One of my favorite hotel pool areas, the infinity pool at the Cancun Hilton Resort & Spa, looks all the way out to the Atlantic Ocean.

Commune of Maccagno on Lake Maggiore

The shores of Lake Maggiore are dotted with small communes and town.  The lake is partially in Italy and partially in Switzerland.  You can take a ferry between various spots around the lake, or you can take a few days and drive around.   This spot is in the Commune of Maccagno, on the Italy side.  It’s a work-a-day little town, with only a few restaurants and interesting spots, but the people were marvelously friendly, and I’m glad we stayed there.
